SYMPTOMS

Users can open links to the PDF links to Main Files that have not gone through publishing but they are unable to open the PDFs published by Adlib. When opening a published PDF file from within MasterControl, a blue box is overlaid on the page making the content unreadable, and a message (JavaScript must be enabled) appears.

Often an error is seen:

eval(1) : error: found ':' when expecting ';'

Can also show the following error(s):

TypeError: undefined is not a function
TypeError: this.info.toSource is not a function.

When viewing pdfs inside the Adobe Acrobat Chrome add-on, PDF will produce the error "Published MasterControl documents frequently use JavaScript. If you are seeing this message, your viewer either does not support JavaScript or it is disabled. If you are using Adobe Acrobat, please enable JavaScript. If you are using another viewer, you will need to configure your browser to view PDF files externally in Adobe Acrobat." You can not use the Chrome Adobe Acrobat add-on to view pdf documents. You must download the file  and open the pdf locally using a pdf viewer on your machine.

CAUSE

Published PDFs contain JavaScript additions that are not supported by Chrome's built-in PDF viewer plugin.

RESOLUTION

For older versions of Chrome: Turn off the Chrome PDF Viewer plugin:

  1. Type chrome://settings/content into the address bar in Chrome.
  2. Find the Chrome PDF viewer and click the Disable link.
  3. The file will now be downloaded to the PC and can be opened with Adobe Reader.

For Newer versions of Chrome: Set Chrome to download PDFs instead of automatically open them:

  1. In the address section of a Chrome browser window, type the following: chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments
  2. Enable "Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome"
